The business situation on halsted street, between cermak and roosevelt, has hit an all-time low.
the vacancy in pilsen could be partially blamed to the property’s owner; however, i believe that the lack of rapid transportation and low foot traffic have a big impact on both university village’s and pilsen’s poor performance.
the only transportation at the moment is the #8 bus, which comes by every 20 minutes; more often than not the bus is packed with students, causing the bus driver to skip scheduled stops leaving new passengers waiting for the next bus.
in addition, the two cta train stops (blue and orange) on halsted are located 2 miles away from each other.
adding a new cta train stop (red + orange) on 18th and wentworth/clark would help alleviate the transportation issue. in addition to the train stop, the 11th ward could schedule a shuttle bus in pilsen and university village.
