Train Horn Quiet Zones

Yorkville, IL
Train Horn Quiet Zones
Description:

Please vote and comment if you want City Of Yorkville to create quite zones for trains passing by so the trains won’t blow their horns when crossing roads.
Establishing Quiet Zones:
In a quiet zone, railroads have been directed to cease the routine sounding their horns when approaching public highway-rail grade crossings. Train horns may still be used in emergency situations or to comply with other Federal regulations or railroad operating rules. Localities desiring to establish a quiet zone are first required to mitigate the increased risk caused by the absence of a horn.

This train devaluates all property along the route The town is to cheap to put up crossing gates, other subdivisions have gates but Yorkville none Safety is not a priority?

This train runs through our backyard in the River's Edge neighborhood. While we understood what we were getting into when we purchased this home, the constant blowing of the train horn for blocks at a time seems extremely unnecessary. A quiet zone would be greatly appreciated, but a re-routing of this train route would be even better!!! (Wishful thinking I am well aware of....)

Trains currently blow two longs, a short, and another long before each crossing, which means when the Railnet line is traveling through downtown Yorkville, for example, it is constantly blowing. If they can't be eliminated altogether, maybe a compromise--in residential areas, and during night hours, just one horn blast at each crossing?

David Scott Yorkville, IL

Yes. No horn. Gates on 47 a must.

Some engineers are worse than others. Is it really necessary to lay on the horn at 3:00 am? It’s outrageous. This would be at the Kennedy road crossing.

Yorkville, Bristol, Oswego- abolish train horn pollution to enhance home tranquility, not disturb it. Many towns w/high volume pedestrian/vehicular traffic abolish this pollution w/nothing more than crossing gates, lights w/bells and No Train Horn signs. Cannonball, Kennedy & Mill Roads have incessant blaring horns. Is there no compromise? Maybe Automated Horn System w/flashing Quite Zone Indicators, mounted at crossing to direct horn noise down roadway, reducing it from residential areas?

A horn at a crossing makes sense, but given there is about 12 crossings in downtown yorkville, that’s a lot of horn, especially for families. The trains are not moving fast so good lighting along the tracks in the downtown portion and the bell you hear on the trains going from the city through the burbs would be a great compromise to the horns. It would help with residential value and appeal to downtown. Maybe Teslas electric trains will be around soon…
