Permanently remove beg buttons at crosswalks to improve walkability & prevent spread of COVID-19

Oak Park, IL
Permanently remove beg buttons at crosswalks to improve walkability & prevent spread of COVID-19
Description:

“Beg buttons” are located on traffic signal light polls and, when pressed by a pedestrian, trigger an eventual walk signal. Besides the fact that they prioritize car movement over pedestrian movement (drivers have no equal task), they require a person to touch a button that has been touched by any number of others amidst our battle with COVID-19.

The Village of Oak Park should disable all beg buttons and convert to automatic signals to improve the safety of pedestrians.

Click the *Link* button below to learn how Minneapolis is converting 450 of their signals.

Click the *Video* button below to view a video by Dr Brian Doucet, Associate Professor at the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo, that describes the concept of 'beg buttons' and how they make it difficult and time-consuming to cross the street
